The screen does not have a hatch that holds it cosed which is a little concern for me but one nice feature is the texture on the frame all around the laptop which really gives the laptop a nice visual. The laptop lasts for 3 hours generally but can last up to 5 hours. It really depends on what you are doing on it. I have yet to experiance a freeze or slow down from the cpu while I use my everyday applications on the laptop. Though when you do use more intesive programs the laptop does slow down which sucks but I didn't buy a power house just an everyday performer.

The notebook is very fast and Asus supplies a free 32 bit Win7 upgrade that they will mail out to registered owners who ask for it on their website. The specs are outstanding in this price range. I bought this for school and gaming and it is very capable in both departments. This unit has bluetooth which I might use for a mouse and an esata port which I am sure will come in handy for portable storage. Setup with my home network was quick and trouble free. This laptop gets 5 stars for features, functionality, specs and I like what seems to be Asus commitment to quality and providing the best value for dollars spent. The fact that they replied in various reviews shows that they take customers complaints seriously and I like the cut of their jib for doing so. It isn't touted on the description page but if you fill out their registration form they bump their warranty up to two years for the hardware including accidental drops (one time only).

    Cons: No upgrade path or drivers for Win 7 64 bit. I installed it but couldn't get full functionality and Asus' driver page for this notebook only has Vista drivers. There are drivers for other notebooks but there were a dizzying amount of them and hard to decipher which would work where. I put Vista back on there until Asus has 64 bit drivers up for it and will probably upgrade to 64bit when I get the win7 disk as it will be accompanied by a win7 notebook driver disk.

    Other Thoughts: I don't notice the keyboard lag but there are fixes for it posted in some of the reviews. As far as disabling the touchpad there is a handy blue button above the keypad that turns this on and off as well as a function with the touchpad software that turns the touchpad off if you have a mouse connected.

    1) Screen: Clear, bright, and easy on the eyes.
    2) Construction: Not a rock but not cheap. (Fits the price)
    3) Keys: Actually an amazingly nice keyboard to type on.
    4) Sound: Quality, still coming from small speakers though.
    5) Graphics: Rocks WoW's world. Mileage may vary.
    6) Processor: Never seems to bog down.
    7) Memory: Vista is still snappy.

    Cons: 1) Touch Pad: Needs to be 1/2 inch to the right.
    2) USB: No rear. Right side is too far forward.
    3) Bluetooth: None :(
    4) Finger Prints?: No. Seriously get over them.

    Other Thoughts: You have to make very few compromises for the price on this Laptop. You get a stellar platform and are probably saving nearly $500.00 from other similar models.

    Finger Prints: Yeah they are there. Just get over it or buy a key cover.

    The keyboard is really very nice to type on.

    If you have weak wireless signal one of your antenna has probably just disconnected. Flip the laptop over and open up the smaller access panel. Plug it back in.

    Free Windows 7 upgrade:

    Do yourself a favor and just completely reinstall Vista. Then go to acer's website and download the software components you want.

    If you get warnings that you are trying to install 32 bit drivers on a 64 bit system just make sure you have the correct version of windows selected on the downloads page.

    Overall I am very satisfied with this purchase. Price and features vs Downsides definitely a 5-star product.

The 802.11 B,G,N wireless picks up my linksys G router at the opposite end of the house and up one floor as the strongest possible signal. The unit it replaced couldn't connect at all unless I held my mouth just right. I have no trouble printing wirelessly to either my Brother laser printer or Epson all-in-one inkjet after installing the right drivers. Both printers are attached to a 32-bit Vista desktop that's hooked directly to the wireless router and shared. HP gives excellent phone support. I was on the phone to them when we discovered the HDMI hookup problem mentioned in Cons. The tech support phone rep worked with me for almost an hour, and he did a very good job.

    Decent Video Card, processor and overall great specs
    Nice Crisp Screen, 14.1" Widescreen with 1280 x 800 resolution
    Small and fairly lightweight
    Looks good and the finish doesn't show off fingerprints
    Nifty little extra was the remote that came with it. I have yet to use it though, but it stores easily in the side of the laptop.
    I was on a budget to find a laptop for classwork. I really only needed something relatively cheap, but wanted to spend that extra bit to find not so much a desktop replacement, but something that would easily serve as my computer while I'm away from home for long periods of time. The vid card is designed for entertainment media. It runs most of the games I installed on medium settings just fine. I haven't had any trouble with any of the drivers for any feature included. With 4 gigs of RAM I haven't had any problems with Vista either.

    Overall a very solid little laptop for the $600 price tag I paid for it ($550 once the mail in rebate arrives). I doubt I could get much better in the way of pre-made laptops for that same amount of money.

None of that extra useless junk every other company puts on your computer. It comes with one thing pre-installed: WinRAR(other than the OS and all the standard windows components), surprisingly it doesn't come with Firefox pre-installed, though. On first bootup it will ask you which extra programs you want to install. The Burning software is required(to burn the recovery disk I suppose), and the CrazyTalk webcam software(I highly recommend installing it, you can have fun just playing with your webcam for hours!!)
    The graphics on this laptop are top of the line. I can play Call of Duty 4 with full graphics with a minimum of 50-60 fps. If you are a gamer on the go this is definitely the laptop for you. The built in bluetooth is also a major plus(due to the lack of usb ports). I use a bluetooth mouse with it.

    Heat. This beast runs at a minimum of about 40 Celsius for the processor and around 45-50 for graphics processor. When gaming or running graphics and processor intensive applications I've recorded temperatures upwards of 70. So by all means, people, buy a cooling table. The turbo button has no fault protection, in other words if you hit it you have a decent chance of getting a BSOD or just locking up. So far I've determined it happens no matter what if you try to turbo boot up. So don't be impatient when it boots up. Similarly, don't press it in the middle of games. Go to the menu pause it, whatever. You've got a fairly good chance of it happening when you're using the processor a lot. (But just ventilate it good you should be fine)

    The wireless card is standard "G" technology, hasn't been upgraded to "N".

    Not so much of a con as annoying, but if you disable the trackpad it will re-enable when you restart windows, that includes waking up from sleep mode.

    Other Thoughts: Not a pro not a con, but something you will need to know. Because it has such a powerful graphics card, while plugged in you will be able to run just about anything, but take the AC adapter off and you will notice considerable lag (from 60 to 4 fps).
    One thing I thought was extremely awkward was that the keyboard has two backslash keys(the one that has | and \[right above enter][and below enter, between up and 1 on the numpad]) and as other people have said it gets dirty quick, so you people like me who need their stuff clean as can be, keep a microfiber cloth with you >.<

    Finally the exhaust is ported directly where you would put an external mouse if you're a righty like 70-90% of the world. This could be a pro or a con. If you have cold hands like me it's great cause it keeps em nice and warm so you can click good while gaming. If you have hot hands it's not so fun cause it can get hot(with those temperatures reaching upwards of 70 Celsius or about 160 Fahrenheit and whatnot)

    Laptop comes with 32-bit x86 Windows pre-installed. Why manufacturers create 64-bit machines and then install 32-bit OSes on them is beyond me. I immediately reimaged the machine to x64 Windows Vista, which also eliminates all of the bloatware. Wasn't sure how much battery life I'd get--seems to be about 1.25 hours--but not sure it's really a "con" since I have the Windows power management sent to "max performance."

    My wife bought me this laptop so I could work on projects without confining myself to the basement for hours. It's a sweet, fast machine that I've been very impressed with. With both wired and wireless connectivity, I can work anywhere with it, and it's got a strong wireless antenna...I can detect a neighbor's wireless that's easily 200 feet away and through brick!

The whole desktop looks nice and has a nice glow to it. Computer runs smooth even from the start, disabling extra programs will seal the deal with whatever business applications you're trying to run. Wireless card picks up amazingly and the face recognition detection is nice the best part is the storage and RAM which allows someone to use this as their main computer.     Definitely not a gaming laptop, but that's not really a Con. The camera is a bit lacking, but that's how most built-in cameras are in laptops displays.

    I purchased the laptop to handle applications for both school and some of my online activities and it runs the programs just fine. Office runs smooth and internet applications run flawlessly. File transfer is quick both inside the computer and between two computers.

    There are plenty of programs that come with the computer that use the built-in camera and to help backup files or the operating system of the computer. Don't forget to create the three backup DVDs just in case something happens, the laptop does NOT come with any backup DVDs, but comes with a built-in backup system to create your own. This includes the drivers and applications that the computer comes with.

I partitioned the hard drive and store all my keeper files on the second drive, and I have Windows XP Pro installed, so this section of the review is based on the fact that this laptop performs excellent with this software.

    The screen is fantastic; widescreen and vibrant at a resolution of 1280 x 800. The hard drive is large and runs its processes relatively fast... 150 GB should be adequate for anyone who does not need storage for hundreds of movies or videos. The processor is a dual core Intel, and coupled with the 2GB of DDR ram, I never really have to wait for anything to process, at least not that I have noticed. Big applications like Photoshop will still take a few seconds via splash screen to load. The burner is great too--I have already burned quite a few CDs and DVDs and they only take about two to seven minutes to do, depending on the amount of data.

    Oh, where do I begin? I'll start with a little one. I wish this laptop was a bit wider, just so I could have a numpad bundled with it. I didn't realize how much I use those until I didn't have one any more. The only way to activate the numpad on the keyboard is to press Fn + F11, which then overrides some of the letters on the keyboard.

    The big gripe here is the operating system, yes the one that comes BUNDLED with the laptop. Vista comes pre-loaded, and it is downright terrible. Don't get me wrong, I like Vista just fine... it runs great on my parents' Dell desktop. But the one that came on this laptop is faulty in many ways... it kept having to shut down Windows Explorer every time I right clicked something. I opted to format the machine and install WinXP pro and needless to say, it has been running like a dream come true ever since. If anyone follows suit, just remember to go into your Bios settings and change the SATA to compatible... winxp has problems with what the defaults we

    I purchased this laptop when it was on sale, hence the low "price" in my review title. If it wasn't for the sale then I wouldn't have forked over that much dough for a laptop that wasn't more impressive with the numbers (higher ram, hd, etc).

    A lot of the users here complain about the toshiba software but those applications aren't a nuisance at all--in fact, they activate some of the features that otherwise wouldn't be present, like touchpad functionality, Function keys, media keys, and a few drivers for wifi, LAN and display, which you will have to download from toshiba's site if you ever reformat your system.
