The world of software development is a fast-moving sector where constantly coming up with new ideas, features and products is essential to survive. The key to this is understanding what the fundamentals of good innovation strategy actually are.
The starting point is having some form of research and development within your organization. This provides the opportunities for idea creation and centralization. It is essential that new concepts are collated within one group of individuals and IT infrastructure systems are used to bring together these concepts. Ideas need to come from all departments, including customer services, marketing, sales and the executive levels. For example, software companies developing online web services will often produce releases on an ongoing basis (e.g. in the case of Google and Gmail) whereas software development of a word processor may only receive incremental updates on a yearly basis. Aligning the lifecycle of research to your product release cycle ensures you have a constant stream of new product ideas and features.
Finally, there is no point having research if there is not proper communication channels and idea transference between both groups. This initially takes the form of prototypes but may require transferring staff in between the two groups to ensure the proper transference of ideas. This can often be done at the start of the release cycle or product development phase.
